CRAFTSMANSHIP
WITHOUT COMPROMISE

Founded in 2018 by master craftsman Elias Thorne, Hewn & Hearth began in a converted warehouse on the Red Hook waterfront. What started as a one-man workshop has evolved into a dedicated studio committed to the enduring principles of honest construction.

In 2024, we relocated our primary workshop to the Catskills, where we continue to craft each piece by hand. The move allowed us to expand our capabilities while maintaining the intimate, detail-oriented approach that defines our work.

Every commission begins with a conversation. We believe the best furniture emerges from understanding how you live, what you value, and the story you want your space to tell.

Our Process

FROM RAW MATERIAL
TO REFINED VISION

Every piece follows a rigorous six-stage process, combining traditional joinery techniques with modern precision. The result is furniture built to outlast trends and become heirlooms.

01

CONSULTATION

We begin with an in-depth conversation about your space, lifestyle, and vision. This includes site visits for local projects and detailed video consultations for remote clients.

  • Site assessment
  • Lifestyle analysis
  • Concept sketches
02

DESIGN & SPECS

Elias develops detailed 3D renderings and technical specifications. You'll see exactly how your piece will look, down to the grain pattern and joinery details.

  • 3D modeling
  • Material selection
  • Technical drawings
03

MATERIAL SOURCING

We source only FSC-certified hardwoods from sustainable suppliers. Each slab is hand-selected for grain pattern, color, and character that matches your vision.

  • FSC certified woods
  • Steel from US foundries
  • Bookmatched pairs
04

HAND CRAFTING

Every piece is built using traditional joinery techniques in our Catskills workshop. No shortcuts, no compromises—just honest construction that will last generations.

  • Hand-cut joinery
  • Traditional techniques
  • Quality checkpoints
05

FINISHING

We use only natural oil and wax finishes from Odie's Oil family. These finishes enhance the wood's natural beauty while providing durable, food-safe protection.

  • Natural oils & waxes
  • Hand-rubbed finish
  • Food-safe sealants
06

DELIVERY

White-glove delivery and installation for local projects. For remote clients, we work with specialized furniture shippers who understand the value of handcrafted work.

  • White-glove service
  • Professional installation
  • Care instructions

TRADITIONAL JOINERY

We don't use screws or nails where traditional joints will do. These time-tested techniques create stronger, longer-lasting connections that honor the craft.
